Older Homes: Cast Iron, Galvanized and Clay

Much of Vancouver’s housing stock predates the materials used today. Character homes across Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Grandview-Woodland commonly still have cast iron drain stacks that have rusted through at the base, galvanized steel supply lines that have closed up with corrosion and dropped the pressure at the fixtures, and clay sewer laterals that roots have found.

None of those fail politely. They fail behind a wall or under a slab, usually in the winter. If the water pressure in an older Vancouver house has been dropping for years, that is not the City — that is the pipe.

Plumbing in Vancouver: What Comes Up Most

Typical Vancouver Jobs

Permits and Sewer Separation

Vancouver is the one municipality in the Lower Mainland with its own building by-law rather than working directly from the provincial code, and plumbing permits are issued by the City of Vancouver. We handle the permit and the inspections as part of the work.

The City is also progressively separating its combined storm and sanitary sewers. When that work reaches your street, property owners may be required to separate the storm and sanitary connections on their own property to match. If you have had a notice from the City about your sewer connection and are not sure what it means for you, call us and we will read it with you.
