A fireclay farmhouse sink is a beautiful thing and a genuinely awkward installation. Empty, a large one runs around 150 lb. Full of water and dishes, you are asking the cabinet beneath it to carry roughly twice that, permanently.
Why Support Comes First
A standard base cabinet is built to hold a countertop, not a block of fired clay. Without reinforcement the cabinet slowly racks, the sink settles, and the first thing that tells you is a cracked seam in a stone counter, or a drain connection that has pulled apart under the floor of the cabinet.
We build a support platform inside the cabinet, carried on the cabinet sides and the floor rather than on the cabinet bottom alone, and we set the height so the sink lands exactly where the counter template expects it. On an undermount installation that tolerance is small, and it has to be right before the counter is templated, not after.
Handmade Means Not Identical
Fireclay is fired at high temperature and every sink moves a little in the kiln. Two sinks of the same model can differ by several millimetres and neither is defective. That is why the sink has to be on site and physically measured before anyone cuts a counter or frames an opening. Working from the catalogue dimensions is how people end up with a visible gap on one side.
Drainage And Sealing
- The drain is set with the correct sealant for the material, tightened with the weight of the sink fully supported.
- The trap arm is positioned for the deeper basin, which sits lower than a standard sink and leaves less room to fall to the wall.
- Sealing around the apron and under the counter is done with a flexible sealant, because the sink and the cabinetry move at different rates.
- Everything is tested with the basin filled and drained before the cabinet goes back together.
Before You Buy One
Check the cabinet width you have, confirm whether the sink is designed for undermount or flush installation, and have it delivered before your counters are templated. A fireclay sink lasts decades. The installation is what decides whether those decades are quiet ones.
