What it is
A thermostatic mixing valve sits behind the shower wall and holds the outlet temperature at whatever you set it to. Grohtherm 1000 and Grohtherm SmartControl are the common Canadian models. SmartControl replaces the handle with push-buttons: press for on, turn for volume.
What it does for your home
The alternative is a pressure-balancing valve, which reacts to pressure changes rather than holding temperature. When a toilet flushes and the cold drops, a pressure-balance valve cuts the hot to protect you — so you do not get scalded, but the temperature moves. A thermostatic valve simply holds. You set 39 degrees and it stays there while the dishwasher runs and someone flushes upstairs.
- Temperature holds regardless of other water use in the house
- Safety stop at 38 degrees that must be deliberately overridden
- Two people can shower without anyone shouting
- SmartControl buttons are far easier for arthritic hands than a lever
- Genuinely important where children or elderly parents cannot move quickly
What it needs to be installed properly
Grohtherm comes in two forms and the difference matters. An exposed bar valve, such as the Grohtherm 1000 shown above, mounts on the face of the tile and can be fitted to an existing shower with matching inlet centres. A concealed valve is buried in the wall and has to be set at the correct depth for your finished wall thickness before the wall closes — get that wrong and the trim will not sit flush against the tile. The temperature dial carries the SafeStop marking at 100F / 38C, which is the point you have to deliberately press past to go hotter.
Who it suits — and who it does not
If anyone in the house cannot get out of the way of a sudden temperature change quickly — small children, an elderly parent, anyone with reduced mobility — thermostatic is not a luxury. Scald injuries happen in the seconds a valve takes to react. For a single adult in a small apartment, pressure balance is adequate and cheaper.
