GROHE Touchless and Sensor Faucet Installation

What it is

Sensor faucets run the water when a hand is presented and stop when it is withdrawn. Eurosmart Cosmopolitan E and Bau Cosmopolitan E are the common commercial models; touchless pull-down faucets are available for domestic kitchens.

What it does for your home

In a working kitchen the case is obvious the first time you have raw chicken on both hands, or a toddler on one hip. You never touch the handle, so the handle never needs cleaning. In a commercial washroom it cuts water use and removes the surface everyone touches.

What it needs to be installed properly

Power. Either a transformer under the sink or a battery pack, and it has to go somewhere a technician can reach without emptying the cupboard. That is a rough-in decision. Battery models eventually need the batteries changed, and if the housing is buried behind the waste pipe that becomes a job rather than a task.

Who it suits — and who it does not

Strong choice for busy family kitchens and essentially standard for commercial washrooms. Less compelling in a guest bathroom that gets used twice a month, where the battery will die between uses and nobody will notice until someone tries to wash their hands.
