Solving High-Pressure Plumbing Stress: Expansion Tank Install
A client in Walnut Grove was frustrated by a water heater that was only five years old but was already showing signs of failure. They were also experiencing “water hammer” (loud banging in the walls) every time the laundry finished a cycle. After a quick diagnostic, we found that the home lacked a way to handle thermal expansion. Without an expansion tank, the water pressure in the home was spiking to dangerous levels every time the tank heated up, putting the entire plumbing system at risk of a burst.
The Solution:
We didn’t just replace the leaking parts; we fixed the root cause of the problem by installing a high-quality expansion tank system.
Pressure Regulation: First, we tested the home’s incoming pressure and adjusted the Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) to a safe $50\text{ psi}$ to ensure a baseline for the new tank.
Tension-Free Installation: We used a stainless steel braided connector and a wall-mount kit. This ensures that as the tank fills with water (becoming quite heavy), it doesn’t put any physical strain on the water heater’s pipes.
Bladder Calibration: We manually adjusted the tank’s internal air pressure to perfectly sync with the home’s water pressure. This “tuning” is the difference between a tank that works for 10 years and one that fails in two.
Verification: We installed a temporary pressure gauge to show the homeowner that the “spikes” had been eliminated, even during a full heating cycle.
GENERAL OVERVIEW
The Result:
The “banging” pipes were silenced, and the dripping from the water heater’s relief valve stopped immediately. The homeowner saved the cost of a premature water heater replacement and gained peace of mind knowing their pipes were no longer under constant stress.
